๐ก Prompt Engineering Tips
Best practices for crafting effective AI prompts
Be Specific
Avoid vague language like "thing" or "stuff". Use concrete terms and provide clear examples. The more specific your prompt, the better the output.
Use Structure
Break complex prompts into sections with headers (##), numbered lists, or bullet points. This helps AI models understand your intent better.
Define Roles
Start with "You are an expert..." to set context. This helps the AI adopt the right perspective and tone for your task.
Provide Examples
Include example inputs and desired outputs. This demonstrates the format and quality you expect, reducing the need for revisions.
Set Constraints
Specify length limits, format requirements, tone, and any constraints upfront. This prevents the AI from going off-track.
Iterate & Refine
Use version control to track changes. Test different phrasings and learn what works best for each model and use case.
Chain of Thought
For complex reasoning, ask the model to "think step by step" or "show your reasoning". This dramatically improves accuracy on difficult problems.
Few-Shot Learning
Include 2-3 examples of desired outputs before your actual request. This teaches the model your preferred style and format instantly.
Balance Detail & Brevity
Too much detail can confuse; too little lacks context. Find the sweet spot - usually 100-500 words for most tasks.
Output Format First
Specify your desired output format upfront (JSON, markdown, table, etc.). This prevents reformatting and ensures consistency.
Use Negative Prompts
Tell the model what NOT to do. "Avoid jargon", "Don't use bullet points", or "Exclude personal opinions" helps set boundaries.
Adjust Temperature
Temperature controls randomness. Lower (0.2-0.5) for factual outputs. Higher (0.7-1.0) for creative responses. Note: Not available in all interfaces.
Test Across Models
Different models excel at different tasks. Test your prompt on 2-3 models to find the best fit for your specific use case.
Use Delimiters
Wrap user inputs in clear delimiters (```, XML tags, or ###). This prevents prompt injection and clarifies boundaries.
Set the Tone
Explicitly state desired tone: "professional", "conversational", "academic", or "friendly". This ensures consistent voice.
Quantify When Possible
Use numbers: "3 examples", "500 words", "5 bullet points". Quantifiable instructions produce more predictable results.
A/B Test Variations
Create multiple prompt versions and test them systematically. Track which performs best for your specific metrics and use case.
